Online casino play in Ontario

Shorelines Casino Peterborough, at 3800 Fisher Drive, is a land-based casino where you play in person on the floor. Online casino play in Ontario runs under its own rules, and this page sets them out plainly.

The rules for online play in Ontario

Ontario's regulated online casino market opened on April 4, 2022. Since then, a private online operator is legal in Ontario only when two things are true. It is registered with the AGCO, the regulator. Second, it has an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario.

You can check any site yourself. iGaming Ontario keeps the official directory of these operators at igamingontario.ca. If an operator is missing from that directory, it does not meet both conditions. Age and place matter as well. Online play is for people 19 and older, the same age limit that applies at the door of a casino. You also have to be physically in Ontario while you play.

Where OLG.ca fits

OLG.ca is the Ontario government's own online casino, run by OLG. It is for people 19 and older, and only while they are physically in Ontario. OLG has a second role that touches Peterborough directly: it conducts and manages casino gaming in Ontario. Private service providers run the casinos day to day, and on Fisher Drive that is Great Canadian Entertainment, under its Shorelines Casinos brand. The casino is part of OLG's East gaming bundle.

BetGuard and My PlayBreak

BetGuard, at betguard.ca, is iGaming Ontario's self-exclusion for online play. One enrolment opts a person 19 or older out of every regulated Ontario gambling site, OLG.ca included. You choose the term: 6 months, 1 year, 5 years or a custom length. It does not cover land-based casinos, including the one on Fisher Drive.

That job belongs to My PlayBreak, OLG's self-exclusion program for land-based casinos. A break lasts 3 or 6 months, or 1 to 5 years, and bars entry to any Ontario casino. It cannot be cut short. To enrol, call the OLG Support Centre at 1-800-387-0098, ask casino staff or see a PlaySmart Centre coordinator.

How this guide is paid

This guide is not a casino, takes no bets and has no accounts. Paid links appear on the home page only, and each is marked Ad. There are three: a button in the menu, a block below the opening-hours tool and one near the end of the page. All three lead to one private online casino partner, which pays the guide a commission. The partner can change.

That partner is not OLG.ca. It has no connection with OLG, the AGCO, Great Canadian Entertainment or any casino in this guide, including the one on Fisher Drive. Before you use any online operator, you can look it up in the iGaming Ontario directory at igamingontario.ca.

Quick answers

How can you tell an online casino is legal in Ontario?

Check the iGaming Ontario directory at igamingontario.ca. A private operator is legal in Ontario only when it is registered with the AGCO and has an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario.

Does the casino on Fisher Drive run an online casino?

This guide has no information about one. The casino's page is on the operator's site, greatcanadian.com, and that is the place to ask.

Does BetGuard cover the casino on Fisher Drive?

BetGuard does not cover land-based casinos. It opts a person out of every regulated Ontario gambling site, OLG.ca included. For the casino, the program is My PlayBreak.

Why does the home page carry Ad links?

The guide is paid through them. The three links on the home page, each marked Ad, lead to one private online casino partner. That partner pays the guide a commission and can change. No other page carries paid links.
